MG Motor, the Chinese-owned British sports-car maker, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) has announced that it will introduce a concept car called Icon at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show, also releasing the official sketches of the car. Called Icon MG 2012 Concept Car, this small crossover is similar in size to the Nissan Juke, and is powered by a 135-hp turbo 1.5-liter gasoline engine. It's the first SUV concept from MG and was created by the MG global design team headed by British director Anthony Williams-Kenny. It takes inspiration from some of the legendary MG models of the past, including the MGA and MGB GT. The concept comes with a bold interior, offering suicide rear doors, four individual bucket seats, as well as the possibility to fold the two rear ones into the floor.

Talking about a crossover, which is currently using the AS21 internal name and is expected to enter production in 2014. The vehicle tries to bring back the spirit of the original MGB GT that debuted in 1965 and will be underpinned by the same platform as the MG 5 and the Chinese market Roewe 350. Under the hood, we find SAIC’s turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol unit, which offers 140 hp.

MG has scooped a major design award with its stunning Icon MG 2012 Concept Car. It has been awarded the prestigious 'Best Concept' title at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show, one of the most sought-after awards on the international automotive show calendar.
Williams-Kenny, who also led the design team responsible for the awardwinning MG6 production car, has recently been promoted to his new role as Global Director, SAIC Design, said: "It's a great honour to win this very important award, particularly when the judges put the Icon MG 2012 Concept Car ahead of so many other famous brands. The judges obviously shared our enthusiasm and vision for MG which is one of the best loved brands in the world."

The Icon MG 2012 Concept Car features a coupe-like profile and rear-hinged rear passenger doors that enable easier access for occupants that sit in the back. Insiders have confirmed the company plan to bring the Icon to production by 2014 and it is also possible that the model could spawn an open top roadster variant as well. A target price of roughly £16,000 has been mentioned with the majority of manufacturing conducted in China followed by final assembly at MG's Longbridge factory in Birmingham, UK.
