Loaded with an array of newly conceived equipment and ideas, Redigo open-roof car enables users to enjoy fun-filled drives in the open air. All four occupants, not only the driver but also the front- and rear-seat passengers, can share the pleasure of traveling together.
The large glass roof on either side slides open toward the center for a feeling of oneness with the wind, which is one of Redigo's unique attractions. Advanced IT technologies and various entertainment features make drives even more enjoyable. Redigo promises space for comfortable travel by four occupants.
The body of Redigo has a rounded form at the four corners as if it were a rubber boat floating in space. The vertically long LED headlamps make a striking impression with their bold look. Redigo pursues Nissan's proposal for a new dimension of car enjoyment.
The "center slot in roof" concept proposes a new sensation of enjoyment in an open-roof car. The glass roof on either side slides under motor power to stow away in the center of the roof without sacrificing the luggage area capacity. Occupants can vary the openness as they wish by opening or closing the glass roof and the windows separately. The glass roof is laminated with a film that has special patterns for controlling the reflection and transmission of light.
The interior incorporates a wealth of new ideas enabling four occupants to enjoy pleasurable driving. Positioned ahead of the front seats is the unique "twin cluster," comprising the same type of display on both the driver's and passenger's sides. The driver-side display is stationary and shows information needed for driving, such as the vehicle speed and various types of warnings. The passenger-side display is movable and presents navigation and entertainment information.
The doors, seats and floor adopt water-resistant materials that actively expand the possibilities for leisure use. The door trim and head restraints feature a soft, glossy urethane material. A cheerful-looking mesh material is applied to the seatbacks.

"When Henry Ford built the Model T, it was affordable, offered the most advanced manufacturing and was built with the most advanced materials," says Dr. Gerhard Schmidt, Ford Motor Company vice president of Research and Advanced Engineering. "In a similar but entirely contemporary way, Model U starts a new cycle. Emissions, safety and fuel economy, also green materials and processes, are all key questions facing the entire industry. We believe the Model U addresses them all."
A partnership was struck among Ford's Research and Advanced Engineering, Ford's Brand Imaging Group (an internal design think tank), Bill McDonough (architect of the new Rouge Center and co-founder, with Dr. Michael Braungart, of the product design firm MBDC), BP and a host of technology suppliers.
"Model U is very different from most futuristic concept vehicles," says J Mays, vice president of Design. "It tries to address the challenges of the future and proposes exciting, realistic solutions that exceed current industry standards. Therefore, I hope it does justice to the name 'Model for Change.'"
Model U offers SUV driving excitement that is affordable, but can grow with a customer's lifestyle and aspirations. It is designed for mass production, but has nearly infinite capacity for being personalized and upgraded. It offers advanced technologies that respond to customers' desires for convenience, entertainment and continuously improved safety. And it looks at how building a car, truck or SUV can strengthen the environment.
"What I think is so exciting about Model U is that it opens the door to a whole new way of looking at things, just like the Model T did," says McDonough. "The vision behind Model U is entirely positive. Instead of focusing on minimizing environmental harm, which is what most approaches to sustainable mobility do, Model U starts to find ways to be re-creational and regenerative - to have fun and create environmental benefits at the same time. That's a totally new vision for the auto industry."

2010 Chevrolet Equinox Crossover Concept Car

Chevrolet unveiled the all-new 2010 Equinox, a compact crossover that blends distinctive design with outstanding efficiency. A new, 2.4L direct injection engine helps the Equinox deliver expected best-in-segment estimated highway fuel economy of 30 mpg (EPA certification pending) – a 25-percent improvement over the previous model. Chevrolet expects nearly two-thirds of customers will choose the efficient, 2.4L engine.
The new Equinox draws its exterior design inspiration from the Chevrolet Malibu sedan and Traverse crossover; and like those vehicles, the new Equinox complements its styling with attention to detail and unexpected features, according to Ed Peper, GM North America vice president, Chevrolet.
The Equinox makes its world debut at the North American Auto Show in Detroit next month.
'At a time when customers are so concerned about the fuel efficiency of their vehicle, the Equinox delivers,' said Peper. 'It offers the roominess and capability of a crossover with great fuel economy. Equinox will provide customers a vehicle filled with refinement, comfort and great value.'
The 2010 Equinox goes on sale in mid-2009. It is available in LS, LT and LTZ trim, with available all-wheel-drive. Two new engines are offered, each with fuel-saving direct injection and variable valve timing technology.

Vehicle highlights include:
  • New 2.4L Ecotec direct injected I-4 engine estimated at 182 horsepower (135 kW), which delivers an estimated 30 mpg highway, 21 mpg city (EPA certification pending)
  • New 3.0L DOHC direct injected V-6 engine estimated at 255 horsepower (190 kW), which delivers an estimated 25 mpg highway, 18 mpg city (EPA certification pending)
  • Driving range of more than 500 miles (800 km) with both engines, for less-frequent fill-ups
  • Six standard air bags: dual frontal air bags; head curtain side air bags and pelvic/thorax seat-mounted side air bags
  • Standard four-wheel disc brakes with StabiliTrak electronic stability control and traction control
  • Standard OnStar and XM Satellite Radio
  • 'Smart' remote starting system that also activates the HVAC system and optional heated seats depending on the outside temperature
  • 'With the 2010 Equinox, we focused on appealing to the senses – from the overall design to the feel of the interior,' said Peper.

Additional design features include:
A multi-dimensional hood and wraparound rear side glass and a wheels-at-the-corners stance
Improved aerodynamic performance through a number of carefully designed exterior features, including moving the base of the windshield forward approximately three inches (75 mm) for a sleeker profile
Equinox's rocker panels are integrated into the doors to make it easier to get in and out of the vehicle. They narrow the area over which a passenger must step, offering protection for pant legs that could brush against dirty rockers. Also, the select use of chrome trim and flush-fitting 'exposed-edge' windshield and rear glass reinforce Equinox's build quality and reduce wind noise.
Dimensionally, the Equinox rides on the same 112.5-inch wheelbase (2,857 mm), but is about one inch (25 mm) shorter in length and an inch wider. It also has a wider front track that enhances the ride and handling.

Interior amenities, storage and flexibility
Inside, the Equinox features attention to detail – including a number of storage bins, such as an oversized glove box; a closed storage bin in the instrument panel above the center stack; and closed storage under the center armrest large enough for a laptop computer.
A 'floating' center stack houses a multitude of ergonomic comfort and convenience controls. Contemporary, ice-blue ambient lighting – featured within and surrounding the center stack, encircling the center-console cupholders and within the door pull cups – accentuates the cabin. The front and rear seats, which include cloth and uplevel, perforated leather-trimmed offerings, were developed to help deliver best-in-class comfort.
The new Equinox retains its MultiFlex rear seat capability, which allows the seat to be moved fore or aft nearly eight inches (203 mm), for the best rear legroom in its class. With the 60/40-split-back rear seat moved all the way forward, the cargo area offers 31.4 cubic feet (889 liters) of storage.
The Equinox's cabin is notable for its quietness. Noise-absorbing elements are built into the chassis, engine compartment and interior.

Convenience, infotainment and connectivity
A variety of technologies are integrated in the Equinox, such as an available seven-inch touch-screen navigation system. Additional features also include:
  • Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity
  • USB audio connectivity
  • DVD-based rear-seat entertainment system with two independent screens to enable DVD viewing on one and gaming on the other
  • Internal memory/hard drive on uplevel radios for storing audio selections
  • Power, programmable rear liftgate
  • Rear-vision camera system, with display in the rearview mirror or in the navigation screen
  • Range of premium-feature audio systems with up to eight speakers and 250 watts of output
Chassis and suspension
The 2010 Equinox is built on a body-integral structure with single-piece body side stampings and targeted applications of high-strength steel. Those elements form the foundation of a solid, quiet driving experience, according to Peper. The strong structure enabled engineers to tune the four-wheel-independent suspension system for greater control and driver feedback.
Standard and available features include:
  • Available all wheel drive
  • Family of 17-, 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels
  • Fuel-saving electric power steering system
The rack-mounted electric power steering system provides greater fuel efficiency of on 2.4L-equipped models that saves nearly 11 miles per tank of gas, or about 572 miles per year (assuming one fill-up per week). With the Equinox's estimated 30 mpg on the highway, the electric power steering system saves the equivalent of approximately one tank of gas each year.
'With the outstanding interior execution and comfort, the stunning exterior design, numerous chassis improvements, and the connectivity to the outside world, the new Equinox is the favorite ride among our engineers,' said Tim Herrick, chief engineer. 'I have to pull the keys out of their hands in order to take it for a spin myself.'

The 427 concept is a modern, all-American sedan inspired by the exuberance of the companyƌs landmark sedans of the 1960s, replete with the uncompromising, 590-horsepower engine that inspired its name.
The 1960s were the heyday of the truly cool American car; a time when slabs of sheet metal, chrome and the Rat Pack defined cool. Those days have given way to multi-purpose vehicles, pop-idols and plastic. But, Ford is signaling a renaissance in the classic American sedan with the new Ford 427 concept introduced at the North American International Auto Show. The Ford 427 concept is a showpiece of the possible design direction for a future lineup of Ford cars. It debuts at the 2003 North American International Auto Show as part of Ford’s biggest-ever wave of new product and concept introductions, nine of which are cars. The 427 concept is a modern, all-American sedan inspired by the exuberance of the company’s landmark sedans of the 1960s, replete with the uncompromising, 590-horsepower engine that inspired its name. “This is a car that you take home, park in your driveway, sit back and let your neighbor eat his heart out,” said J Mays, Ford Motor Company vice president, Design. “The 427 concept is unmistakably Ford and 100 percent American. 427 V-10 Ford Concept Car

The Ford 427 concept proportions are long, low slung and wide. The car's overall profile is classically clean, smooth and unfettered by extraneous detail.
The 427's interior features black leather with corn meal white stitching, billet aluminum trim, and chrome that make the car appear to be solid and structural. Contemporary exterior themes of the muscular bent grille, the squared vertical headlamps and clean American profile are carried over to the interior in an uncompromising fashion.
The steering wheel carries the same leather stitching, with a tight sectional pattern inspired by the angular waterfall bends in the front grille. Visible through the steering wheel is an instrument cluster with a rounded square speedometer and tachometer that are direct descendants of the front and rear lamps. These gauges are analog with bold black numbers bathed in a fiery red glow. The instrument panel also employs billet end-caps that create the illusion that the panel has a core of solid steel. The rearview mirror is trimmed in similar fashion.
The centre console runs the entire length of the interior, conveying the sense that the car has the strength and structure to handle large, potent powerplant. It also creates a sensation that its four-passenger bucket seats form individual roomy fighter jet cockpits. The console houses the six-speed shifter with a modern authoritative brushed billet base capped off with a soft leather shift knob and integrated aluminum emergency brake. Its lower portion adjacent to the floor pan is trimmed in billet and accents the angular slotted billet pedals. Finally, the carpet is all black with chrome checkered flag buttons fastening it in place.
The 427 engine produces a tremendous 590 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 509 foot-pounds of torque at 5500 rpm. Remarkably, the engine is almost 70 pounds lighter than the 5.4-liter 32-valve Cobra R engine from the Ford Mustang.
The engine technologies were developed in Ford facilities between Detroit and Dearborn. So, it was only logical to carve the “Powered By Ford” and “V-10” logo with a Redline Red finish on the billet cam covers. Above that, the engineers bolted a massive aluminum strut tower inspired from the grille. As a final touch, they added lightning bolt caps along the inner fender walls.
